Peon @ MIUC, Tuesday 21st September

You guessed right, Peon are playing the venerated institution that is Melbourne’s Make It Up Club on Tuesday 21st September.
We’re on last up (also playing that night are David Palliser; Heilbron/Dueland/Mclean) and the fun takes place at:

Bar Open

317 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia.

8:30 PM doors

$5/10

Whilst a night of electrofolknoise funky improv sound malarkey is sure to ensue, if you come say hello, we may be inspired further still, possibly naming a composition in your honour. Possibly.

Peon

Got a timely reminder via email (thanks Dan!) that I have been neglectful of this place of late.
All is well in the Sauna but here’s what’s been occurring:

‘Peon’ is the name given to the drums/multi-instrumentation/processing/improv duo I have with Ronny Ferella.
The wikipedia entry is pretty comprehensive with nuanced and historical meanings of this word in various contexts; I like nearly all of them!

Anyhow – we had our first gig last weekend, in a dungeon no less (cheers Liam and crew). We had a thoroughly good time and shall be repeating this process muchly in the coming months. We’re also slated to record in September so you can expect full album-length goodness shortly thereafter.

In the post below is ‘Until the Rain’, a new track I finished today – I like it. It’s more ambient than other stuff I’ve been making for the album so hopefully it will have its own life outside of that.

Listening to what I’ve done so far for my next solo release, a theme is emerging. I don’t think I can escape my 80′s electro/hip hop past and I’m becoming OK with that.

best laid

So my first ‘deadline’ came and went last weekend and I almost made it too, laying down a nice thing in 5 that really plays around with perception.
I failed entirely to factor in the kids school holidays!
We’ve been having fun hanging out and doing stuff together.
Alas, little recording has taken place in the last week although there’s a window opening for today. So I’m heading over to the Sauna right now for maximum sonic exploitation.
And thanks to Stu for giving ‘balkanFactory’ a spin on last nights New Weird Australia show, playing outta Sydney’s FBi radio, Thusdays 9-11pm (Aus EST).

Ronny Ferella / Sam Price

One of the new projects I reference below is a duo with Ronny Ferella.

Ronny plays drums, ngoni, farfisa, vox & processing.
Sam plays drums, dsi tetra, vox & supercollider.

This group is so bangin’ and it has gigs starting in August. Will post more soon.
Here’s a track from rehearsal today (quick’n'dirty recording on the trusty H2):

PS. ‘cos the link is to my bandcamp site, it won’t let me put Ronny in the credits for the embed, annoying! He’s on the track title in bandcamp though..

20 Weeks of DOOOm!

Apologies for break in transmission.. Normal service has been resumed.
Okay, this is where the new album’s at:
I have a bunch of stuff already done I like well enough but, without coming over all Sting (!), I had an odd dream at the weekend and woke up knowing what had to happen.
Working on the premise that I do my best stuff under pressure, I have instilled a deadline.
I have 20 weeks to produce 10 new solo tracks.
Given that I have a couple of other projects on the go and the usual stuff of life, this is going to hurt.
I shall update from the sauna regularly on this one – am thinking webcam could be the go.
Forza!

new work

I submitted this for an Exquisite Cadaver collection being released later on this year by Bleemo Music. The piece is focused on extraneous detail, so probably best go fully-immersive with headphones and cranked volume..
I’m dying to hear what follows this on the compilation, will post here when release details are available.

Sweet Child O’ Mine (Swing Version) by plamere

I always found this lot a tad ludicrous. ‘Swinger’ takes the original and crosses it with a Suzi Quattro style dredge-shuffle (yikes!) and produces something of worth. Has Slash ever sounded this good?

Swinger was written by Tristan Jehan for the Echo Nest Remix API.

You can checkout a copy of the source here (including Swinger),

with instructions to compile here.

(One caveat: on my Ubuntu Lucid installation, the source installs into /usr/local, not /usr, as the instructions say).

This takes me back to ’85.. Allen’s Army, Groove Records and breaking outside of Bentalls in Bracknell etc. Sentimentality aside, this still rocks.

…and all who sail in her

Welcome to my new place.

Renouncing the vapidity of my former MySpace site was ever so cathartic but it left me with no means of airing my wares to those not on my email list.

In the same vein, sharing cool stuff  I’d encountered with my peeps on Facebook was a boon, wading through people’s Farmville updates, not so much.

So, this replaces those. At least for me.

Right now, my domain is but a nascent affair but hang tough dear reader.  I have plans.
