About.
Sam Price is a drummer and improviser based in Naarm / Melbourne. His music is freely improvised and centred on the drum kit, played solo and with others.
He plays in FORTUNA (formerly O Fortuna), a trio with Rob Vinçs on saxophone and Monty Price on guitar. Their debut LP, recorded live in the room at their studio in Altona with no overdubs, is released on 2 December 2026.
Earlier work includes Peon and Pattern Recognition Machines, which used electronics alongside the kit. Sam holds a PhD in Music from the University of Melbourne (2023), where his research concerned noise, the drum kit and synthesis.
I improvise. The kit does nothing it hasn’t always done. There is nothing to decode: I attend to the people in the room, myself included, and to what is happening between us as it happens.
Everything happens in situ. Nothing is hidden.
